Master Sergeant (Retired Air Force) Harold Caraway, 88 of Slocomb, AL , (Fadette Community) passed away Friday, March 15th 2013 at Campbellton-Graceville Hospital after an extended illness. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Monday, March 18, 2013 at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church with Revs. Chester Padgett and Jerry Tanton officiating. Burial will follow in church cemetery with full military honors by the U.S. Air Force, James & Lipford Funeral Home in Graceville directing. Family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers family request memorials be made to the Wounded Warrior Project. Mr. Harold was born in Geneva County (Bald Hill Community), Alabama on May 11, 1924 to the late Oscar and Claudie (White) Caraway. After 28 years of service in the U.S. Armed Forces, he retired in January of 1971. Upon retirement he returned to the family farm in "Nubbin Valley", south of Fadette, AL. During his retirement years, he enjoyed farming and raising cattle. He enjoyed being with his family attending the annual Caraway gathering each summer in various locations Helen, GA, Florida Beaches, Frio river, Texas. During his military career, he was involved in 3 major conflicts: WWII, Korean War & the Vietnam War. He served in the US Army during WWII with the 5th Calvary in the Pacific theater and was present at the signing of the Japanese surrender to US General Douglas McArthur. After serving in the US Army during the Korean War, he joined the US Air Force and retired after 28 years of active duty. He was recognized for his military service by the presentation from the U.S. Congress of an American flag flown over the US Capital in his honor. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eloise, an infant son, Jeffrey Lynn Caraway, his parents, and sister Ruth Singletary. He is survived by his beloved six children Donald Caraway (Joyce) Georgetown, TX, Ann Kremer(Larry), Slocomb, AL, Ronald Caraway (Diane), Conyers, GA, Harry Caraway (Debbie), Rock Hill, S.C., Beverly Whatley (Page), Rehobeth, AL, Phillip Caraway (Bhabygie), Banner Elk, N.C.; two sisters Betty (Scottie) Wright of Ferriday, LA and Helen Finch of Crestview, FL; twenty grandchildren, twenty-four great grandchildren; brother-in-law Nathan Kirkland(Katrean), Graceville; sisters-in-law Carolyn Spears, Montgomery, AL, Christine Phillips(John), Graceville, Sarah Habbard Niceville, FL. The family expresses sincere appreciation to Dr. Steve Davis and the staff at Campbellton-Graceville Hospital for their loving care and service to Mr. Caraway.
